Posio is better known as the hidden gem of Finnish Lapland. Away from the highways Posio’s travel sector has developed to a somewhat different direction than other bigger destinations. The tourism companies are rather small family businesses operated by locals. Hotels and cabins are situated in their own privacy by lakes, in forests or forested areas. Hence the sense of space and silence are very much part of the experiences offered to tourists.

International tourism to Posio has been growing steadily, and after the coronavirus pandemic Posio has caught the attention of tour operators looking for non-touristic, authentic and sustainable destinations.

Husky sledding

Reindeer farm visit

There are more reindeer than people living in the Posio area, so you will see them almost daily running across the streets and in the forests. However, if you want to get a deeper understanding of these fine animals, you can visit a real reindeer farm and learn more about the animals and the livelihood they provide in Lapland. Read more. 

Winter Mountain biking

New multipurpose route opened in early 2021 in the Riisitunturi National Park, Posio, Finnish Lapland. The track takes fatbike riders to the breath-taking scenery of snow-laden forests, and stunning mires and hills resting in a quiet winter’s slumber. Read more.

Winter net fishing

No matter if it’s summer or winter, fishing is an important part of people’s lifestyle in Posio, Finnish Lapland. In this video Oiva, the owner of Oiva Tour, shows how he catches pikes under the ice with a net. After the trip Oiva welcomes the guests to his home and his wife Marketta prepares the fresh fish on a skillet.
